Days of the Week Song Teaching Tips
Here are some RECOMMENDATIONS about how to use the Days of the Week Song and its related teaching materials (video, flashcards, labels, worksheets, coloring pages and music score).
Tip #1: the group layout
Children should be sit in a semi-circle facing the teacher or the music video. This fosters interaction between the teacher and the pupils and among kids.
Tip #2: the video and the song conductor role
You can opt to use or not to use the video:
· If you use the video, let your children enjoy the animation and encourage them to follow the karaoke lyrics if they can read.
· If you don’t use the video, there should be a song conductor who helps children to follow the song. The song conductor’s task consists in pointing at the Days of The Week Labels to the music. Both you or one of your pupils can be the song conductor. You can use your finger to point at the labels, but make sure you have a long stick or magic wand at hand for this purpose. Your kids will be eager to be the song conductor!
Tip #3: foster TPR learning
We want the kids to sing along the days of the week but also to react to the dialogue parts. By singing, children will develop speaking and listening skills. By using the labels and flashcards, children will develop their reading skills. By reacting to specific phrases, children will be learning with J. Asher’s Total Physical Response method.
Trigger | Children’s Reaction | Song conductor’s reaction |
---|---|---|
‘On Monday I clap my hands.’ | Clap their hands gently. | Points to the Days of the Week Song Labels. |
‘On Wednesday I shake my body.’ | Shake their arms and legs. | Points to the Days of the Week Song Labels. |
‘On Friday I go to sleep.’ | Bend their neck, close their eyes and hold their heads with their hands. | Points to the Days of the Week Song Labels. |
‘On Sunday I wave my hands.’ | Wave their hands moderately and say ‘goodbye’. | Waves his hands moderately and say ‘goodbye’. |
Tip #4: a remark for teachers
You probably won’t explain this to your kids but, as a teacher, you should be aware that the correct syllable division for Saturday is SAT-UR-DAY. Instead, our singer says SA-TUR-DAY since it feels much more natural to sing it by moving the ‘t’ to the second syllable.
Tip #5: balance your lessons
Combine the use of the four skills and different interaction patterns among your students. If you are seeking some extra activities for your pupils to work on individually, in pairs or in small groups, remember there are some worksheets and coloring pages at your disposal in this page, under the WORKSHEETS and COLORING PAGES tabs, respectively.
Tip #6: go further!

Days of the Week Song Labels
Labels are a fantastic way of decorating your classroom, motivating your pupils and encouraging them to read. These labels will be very useful during the daily revision of the days of the week.
How to prepare this material
How to use this material
You can use these labels before, while or after singing the Days of the Week Song, as a daily routine.
· If you use the labels while singing the Days of the Week Song, the song conductor (see the TEACHING TIPS tab) will have to point at the Days of The Week Labels to the music.
· If you use the labels after singing the Days of the Week Song, this material will work as a recaping tool. You should ask your children «Well, then… what’s the day today?». Teach your kids to say «Today is …». You can encourage participation by asking questions like «Is it Monday? Is it Saturday?» while you shake your head and denote how silly is what you have just said. Once you have elicited what’s the day today, one of your pupils should take the Hari label and stick it next to the corresponding day. Alternatively, you can do this activity before singing the Days of the Week Song, so the song itself becomes the recaping tool.

Yay! Your children can already sing the Days of the Week Song. Wouldn’t it be great if they learnt how to write them too? Here you have some worksheets that will help them in the process:
Days of the Week Song Worksheet #1 – Word Search
This activity will help your pupils start identifying the days of the week before learning to write them.
How to use this material
Before the activity, review both the days of the week and the ABC if needed. During the activity, your kids should focus on a single word in the box on the bottom of the page, identify its letters, and try to find it above. Crossing out the words they have already found will help your children to make sure what are the remaining words to find. Also, let your pupils note how each day of the week ends with -DAY. Depending on their autonomy, it may be a good idea to do this activity in pairs or groups so they can help each other out. You can even try to solve the exercise all together. After the activity, you may consider giving your pupils the solved page so they can assess their own work and you can check their worksheets later. Fast finishers can color Ellie when they are done. Ask them questions like What color is Ellie’s costume? Is it green? to further practice oral skills.
